Mijn mooiste hittegolfliedje werd in 1966 geschreven door John Sebastian en zijn vrienden van Lovin' Spoonful. Het verscheen in januari 1967 op de derde langspeelplaat van de groep uit Manhattan, die 'Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful' heette. Sebastian hoort tot de allervervroegste intelligente Amerikaanse popschrijvers. Eerder maakte hij al 'Did you ever have to make up your mind', 'Daydream' en ''You didn't have to be so nice''. En voor Woody Allen de soundtrack van zijn filmdebuut What's up Tiger Lily? (1966). Een heel rare film. Allen gebruikte clips uit een Japanse misdaadfilm, waarbij hij geheel eigen Amerikaanse dialogen indubde, waardoor het een komedie werd. John Sebastian speelt nog steeds. De jaatste jaren met de jugband de J-band. Waarin tot zijn dood in 1997 de legendarische zwarte mandolinespeler Yank Rachell meespeelde (eens de kompaan van Sleepy John Estes).
